Gill played three seasons at Ravenscroft School and led the team to a 78–14 record in that span.
As a junior, he averaged 18.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game and led the team to the Class 3A North Carolina state championship.

His father played basketball for East Carolina and was named to the first team All-Colonial Athletic Conference in 1995.
Gill majored in Communication Studies at Nebraska and was on the 2015 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Basketball team at Louisville.
