Ward was born in Shrewsbury in the Province of Massachusetts Bay on January 9, 1762.
He graduated from Harvard University in 1783, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1783, and practiced in Weston.
From 1796 to 1800, Ward served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.
From 1820 to 1839 Ward was Chief Justice of Boston's Court of Common Pleas from 1820 to 1839.
