The intent to build the temple was announced on October 7, 2018, by church president Russell M. Nelson, during general conference.

The spire atop the temple is located on a square base and has a rectangular window on each side.”[11] The design incorporates elements that are reflective of both the local culture and the broader Church symbolism.
