Avondale Estates was founded in 1924 by George Francis Willis, a patent medicine magnate, who purchased the entire village of Ingleside to create a planned community.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2), of which 0.88% is water.

The mostly Tudor-style downtown area of Avondale Estates, known as the commercial district, is home to a variety of businesses including consignment stores.
