Azhar Cachalia

Azhar Cachalia (born 26 June 1956) is a former judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa and former anti-apartheid activist for the United Democratic Front.

[1] Cachalia was born in Scotland and received his schooling in Benoni, South African.

[3] Cachalia was a founding member of United Democratic Front (a coalition of anti-apartheid organisations) in 1983.

Due to his anti-apartheid activities during the late 1980s, he was detained on several occasions by the South African Police.

[4] In 1988 he joined the law firm, Cheadle Thompson & Haysom in Johannesburg as an attorney, becoming a partner and practised at the firm until 1996 when he joined the South African Government as Secretary of Safety and Security.
