On 23 March 1836, a legislative act provided for the organization of the township of Barry.
[11] It is located 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Grand Rapids.
[12] As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,489 people, 1,265 households, and 986 families residing in the township.
There were 1,460 housing units at an average density of 41.9 per square mile (16.2/km2).
17.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
