1829 On July 7, Hüseyin Pashasent an 8,000-man Asakir-i Mansure force, mostly cavalry, to defend Pazardzhik against Russian troops advancing towards Varna The new army performed well, but the offensive was not enough to stop the Russian advance towards Varna.

In the end, 24,000 Russian troops were mustered.

There were also about 15,000 troops in Varna.
