The site is also home to the North East regional branch of Historic England.

It was restored in 1930 by SR Vereker, later Lord Gort, who employed an engineer named R.F.

[5] In July 2009 it was targeted by graffiti vandals who extensively spray-painted the roof with the tags "LG", "GRIM" and "KAME".

[7] The house is a popular attraction during The Late Shows and Heritage Open Days which take place annually, and allow members of the public to see the areas of the house usually not open to public view.

In 1741 its owner Robert Carrick completed the process of altering its facade to what was at the time a modern Georgian brick frontage.
