Bibbona is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Livorno in the Italian region Tuscany, located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) southwest of Florence and about 40 kilometres (25 mi) southeast of Livorno in the Val di Cecina.
The town's hilly location allowed for natural defenses, and strong fortifications are known to have existed by the early middle ages.
In the early middle ages, the town and fortifications were in the possession of the Gherardesca family, and their holdings were confirmed by Pope Innocent III in the 12th century.
Thereafter, ownership transferred to the free towns of Volterra, Pisa, and eventually Florence.
