It was founded in 1901 as the George A. Brewster Hospital and School of Nurse Training, because there was no place for Black people to go to for treatment after the disastrous Great Fire of 1901.
(As in other Southern cities, white hospitals did not treat Black residents before the Civil Rights Act of 1964.)
The hospital began at the West Monroe building, later expanding to East Jacksonville and Springfield.
In the mid-2000s, the city of Jacksonville relocated the building to a parcel of land down the street and spent $1.2 million rehabilitating it for a new use.
