The Llanfyllin Branch of the Cambrian Railways opened on 17 July 1863.
[1] The station was originally named Brongwyn; it was later renamed Bryngwyn.
[2] It was 6+3⁄4 miles (10.9 km) from Llanymynech, and took its name from Bryngwyn Hall.
[1] Originally provided with a wooden shelter, this was later replaced by one of corrugated iron.
In 1923, the Great Western Railway renamed the station Bryngwyn Halt.
