The city is part of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach, FL metropolitan statistical area and is named after an early resident, Alvah A. Bunnell, a shingle maker and supplier of wood to the area's fledgling rail industry.
Interstate 95 is 4 miles (6 km) east of the center of Bunnell via SR 100.
Since 2000, Bunnell is the second-largest city in the state of Florida (by area) with the annexation of over 87,000 acres, which equals 136.000 square miles (352.238 km2).

As of the 2020 United States census, there were 3,276 people, 1,072 households, and 592 families residing in the city.
