Carter is a census-designated place (CDP) in Chouteau County, Montana, United States.
[4] Carter is located in western Chouteau County along U.S. Route 87, which leads northeast 14 miles (23 km) to Fort Benton, the county seat, and southwest 26 miles (42 km) to Great Falls.
The Carter, Montana Hall of Fame honors celebrities who have visited the city.
