Harris began his career as a reporter for the San Francisco Bay Guardian and went on to write for various publications, including Esquire, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Details, Spin, Rolling Stone, Elle, Vibe, and The Source, where he won the ASCAP Deems Taylor Award.
