The racial makeup of the city was 79.3% Black, 14.9% White, 0.6% Native American and 2.6% from two or more races.

39.0% of all households were made up of individuals, and 21.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.

Carthage is traversed by two Arkansas state highways, 48 to the east and 229 to the south.
