[1] In the fourteenth century, Barcelona under the Crown of Aragon is in one of the most prosperous moments of its history: the city has grown up to the Ribera, a humble fishing district, where the church of Santa María del Mar is being built.
In this context a serf, Arnau Estanyol, arrives in Barcelona after fleeing with his father from the abuses of the feudal lords.
Arnau works as stable boy, bastaix [es; ca] and soldier, and then becomes a free man.
