Later, he was assigned to the 11th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, where he flew the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II.

After graduating from the United States Army War College in 1975, Autery was stationed at Beale Air Force Base.

He joined the 28th Bombardment Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base in 1977, serving in the same position until assuming command the following year.
