Coprinus is a small genus of mushroom-forming fungi consisting of Coprinus comatus—the shaggy ink cap (British) or shaggy mane (American)—and several of its close relatives.
Until 2001, Coprinus was a large genus consisting of all agaric species in which the lamellae autodigested to release their spores.
[2] The majority of species of Coprinus were therefore reclassified into three genera placed in Psathyrellaceae: Coprinellus, Coprinopsis, and Parasola.
[2] Coprinus and these segregate genera are now referred to collectively as coprinoid fungi.
Coprinus is New Latin, from the Greek koprinos, "of dung", in reference to the habitat of some of the species.
