[1] Smith was born at Oamaru in North Otago in 1985 and educated at St Kevin's College in the town.
In 2004–05 he made his senior representative debut for Otago, having played age-group cricket for the provincial side from 2000–01.
[4] Playing for the Otago side between 2004–05 and 2010–11 and then being recalled for two season from 2014–15 to 2015–16, Smith made a total of 24 first-class, 16 List A and six Twenty20 appearances.
