The city was one of the main centers of the Yugoslav new wave in the 1970s: VIS Idoli, Ekatarina Velika and Šarlo Akrobata were all from Belgrade[citation needed].

Today, it is the center of the Serbian hip hop scene, with acts such as Beogradski Sindikat, Škabo, Marčelo, and most of the Bassivity Music stable hailing from or living in the city[citation needed].

Instituto Cervantes, Goethe-Institut and Centre Culturel Français are all located in central pedestrian Knez Mihailova Street.
