Daniel R. Mackesey was born July 14, 1954, in Ithaca, New York, and attended Cornell University, where he was a member of the Quill and Dagger society and graduated cum laude in 1977.
He was an integral member of Cornell's national championship teams in 1976 and 1977.
Cornell won the Ivy League championship in each of Mackesey's three seasons on the varsity roster.
Mackesey graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law.
