Sage made his debut in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway at the age of seventeen, where he started 25th and finished twenty laps down in sixteenth.
He also made select starts in the NASCAR Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Series around this time, getting a best finish of sixteenth at Daytona International Speedway.
Sage also made six starts in the ARCA Re/Max Series in 1983, where he got a best finish of twelve at Nashville in the former year, and getting two top-tens in 2003 while driving for Keith Murt.
