The Derry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association has organised it since 1887.
[1] The winners qualify to represent their county in the Ulster Senior Club Hurling Championship.
The winners can, in turn, go on to play in the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship.
Slaughtneil are the only Derry team to have ever won the Ulster Senior Club Hurling Championship lifting the Four Seasons Cup in 2016, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2024[2] The 8 teams in the Derry Hurling Championship are divided into two groups of four.
The teams are ranked in the group stage table by points gained, then scoring difference and then their head-to-head record.
