After graduating from Brigham Young University (BYU), Gray was selected in the fourth round with the 92nd pick in the 1993 NFL draft.

He went on to graduate magna cum laude from Southern Evangelical Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree in 2008, with a focus in apologetics.
