The nature reserve was gazetted on 15 March 1963, has a size of 42.08 square kilometres (16.25 sq mi), and is located within the Avon Wheatbelt bioregion, but does not cover the entire lake.
[4][5] The lake is recognised as a DIWA wetland as it is a drought refuge for waterbirds and a moulting area for the Australian shelduck.
