The 2004 enlargement of the European Union involved ten candidate states, eight from Central and Eastern Europe, and the Mediterranean islands of Malta and Cyprus.

In Armenia, a hearing in the National Assembly on 21 June 2024 was organized by the United Platform of Democratic Forces (UPDF), to consider holding a referendum on the submission of an application for EU membership.
