[3] According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 20.6 square miles (53 km2), all land.
It contains the communities of Swartzville and Reamstown, and part of Stevens and Frysville.
As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 9,954 people, 3,461 households, and 2,709 families living in the township.
17.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
A small portion of the Pennsylvania State Game Lands Number 274 is located along the eastern border of the township.
