Upon graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1952, his first assignment was duty with the 4th Field Artillery Battalion, Camp Carson, Colorado.
[1] He performed advisory duties in both Cambodia and Vietnam during 1963 and 1964, and from August 1964 to June 1965, he attend the United States Army Command and General Staff College, Ft Leavenworth, Kansas.
General Thompson was then assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (International Security Affairs) until July 1970 and he attended the Industrial College of the Armed Forces from August 1970 to June 1971.
He was promoted to Brigadier General on 6 June 1975 and assigned to the Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Department of the Army.
From 29 August 1977 to 1 November 1981, Thompson, then a Major General, served as the Assistant Chief of Staff for Intelligence at the Department of the Army headquarters.
