El Tambo Canton

El Tambo is one of seven cantons located in Cañar Province, Ecuador.

It is situated along the PanAmerican Highway in a valley across from the larger town of Cañar.

[1] Its name comes from the Kichwa “tambu” which means “place of rest or inn”.

The majority of the population of El Tambo is a mixture of indigenous and mestizo people who are dedicated to agricultural activities, thus taking advantage of the fertility of its soil.

About 30 minutes out of El Tambo is the town of Ingapirca named after the Incan ruins that are there.
