Elections in the Marshall Islands

Marshall Islands elects on the national level a head of state – the president – and a legislature.

The Legislature (Nitijela) has 33 members, elected for a four-year term in single-seat and five multi-seat constituencies.

There have been a number of local and national elections since the Republic of the Marshall Islands was founded.

The United Democratic Party, running on a reform platform, won the 1999 parliamentary election, taking control of the presidency and cabinet.

The most recent Marshallese general election took place in November 2023, resulting in a high turnover of legislators as well as a record number (4) of female politicians elected to the legislature.
