[2] Before the establishment of the current embassy, the United States had diplomatic presence in the region, with a consulate in Ezerum, Armenia (now Erzurum, Turkey) in 1896 during Ottoman rule.

The United States recognized the independence of Armenia on 23 April 1920, but the establishment of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, which became a member of the Soviet Union, led to the cessation of Armenia's status as an independent state.

Bush acknowledged Armenia's status as a sovereign nation in an address concerning the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
