As a chamber musician, he was leader of the London String Quartet and recorded all Beethoven violin sonatas with pianist David Wilde.

In a concert at the Proms on 11 August 1971, he played Beethoven's Violin Concerto at the Royal Albert Hall, with the BBC Orchestra conducted by Adrian Boult.
He also played contemporary music such as works by Roberto Gerhard, Berthold Goldschmidt and Olivier Messiaen.
