Birmingham Squadron

On March 30, 2017, the New Orleans Pelicans announced their intentions to have an owned-and-operated NBA G League team by the 2018–19 season located in the Gulf South region.

"[8] On October 24, 2018, the Pelicans announced plans to place their G League team in Birmingham, Alabama, and begin play at Legacy Arena by 2022.

[15] The BayHawks played a shortened, 18-team season at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in 2021 where they made the playoffs, losing to the Lakeland Magic in the quarterfinals 139–110.

[17] Long-time BayHawks president Matt Bresee was honored with the Team Executive of the Year Award that summer, in recognition of his work in Erie.

[21] Following his first season in Birmingham, Ryan Pannone was asked to join Pelicans head coach Willie Green's staff in New Orleans full-time as an assistant.
