[1][2] He played seventeen first-class matches for Cambridge University Cricket Club between 1887 and 1889.
After the outbreak of the Second Boer War, he served with his regiment in South Africa, where he took part in the relief of Kimberley (February 1900), engagements near Johannesburg and the battle of Diamond Hill (June 1900).
He was then stationed in Transvaal east of Pretoria (July to November 1900), and took part in the action at Wittebergen.
