On November 11, 1880, the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (now the United Church of Christ in the USA) and the Congregational Church in Canada sent missionaries and began to evangelize in the highlands of Angola.

The war devastated Angola's infrastructure and severely damaged the nation's public administration, economic enterprises and religious institutions.
The fast-growing denomination[citation needed] is present in 16 of the 18 Angolan provinces.
