He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the College of William & Mary in 1988 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1991.
He was the office's criminal chief from 2008–2010, a line supervisor from 2010–2018, and has been its first assistant United States attorney since 2018.

President Trump nominated Federici to the seat vacated by Judge Robert C. Brack, who took senior status on July 25, 2018.
