He is the Townsend Martin, Class of 1917 Professor of Sociology at Princeton University, the 2021 president-elect of the Eastern Sociological Society, and is also the Director of the Dignity and Debt Network, a partnership between the Social Science Research Council and Princeton.

[1] Wherry earned a doctorate from Princeton University in 2004 and a Masters in Public Affairs (MPA) from the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs (formerly the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs) in 2000.

He has also served as a consultant for The World Bank in the Office of the Vice-President for East Asia and the Pacific, Social Policy and Governance.

Wherry has contributed opinion pieces to The New York Times.
