He then graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude from Amherst College in 1963.

[2] He went on to study at Yale University, where he obtained a Master of Arts in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1967, both in history.

[1] Throughout his career, White has published 18 books, and won several awards for these publications, including a final listing for the Pulitzer Prize for History.

[2] In December 1966, White married Susan Valre Davis, now a family attorney in Charlottesville, Virginia.
