Gallinara Island (known as Isola Gallinara in italian, anciently Isola d'Albenga,[1] Ìsua Gainâa in ligurian) is a small, isolated private island that lies in the Ligurian Sea off the coast of Albenga in the Province of Savona, Liguria, northern Italy.
It is known for its unique humped shape, resembling a turtle and its large population of Herring Gulls.
[6] However, the island was not sold and reverted to being public when it was acquired by MiBACT, the Italian Ministry of Culture.
[8] It's a shelter for the herring gull, with one of the largest colonies of this bird in the Mediterranean, and for rare plant species and stretches of intact shallow sea floor.
It is also included in a SIC (Site of Community Importance) called Isola Gallinara (code IT1324908 ).
