Georg Bernhard

Georg Bernhard (October 20, 1875 in Berlin – February 10, 1944 in New York) was a left-liberal German journalist of Jewish descent who became active against National Socialism early on.

Bernhard's father, Hermann, worked as a merchant and his mother, Helene, was born Soberski.

In 1899 he married Fritze Mühsam and had a child in 1901 called Stefanie Ruth who later became an actress.

From 1898 to 1903, Bernhard held a position as trade editor at the Berliner Zeitung, which belonged to Ullstein.

He advocated the expansion of democracy and - despite the Treaty of Versailles - decidedly for an understanding with France.
