George Benjamin Thorneycroft

George Benjamin Thorneycroft (20 August 1791 – 28 April 1851) was a successful ironmaster and Tory supporter who became the first Mayor of Wolverhampton, after the Borough was incorporated, in 1848.

In partnership with his twin brother Edward he founded Shrubbery Ironworks in Wolverhampton in 1824.

The business continued to grow, even after Thorneycroft's death, and made large profits from production of armour plating and shells during the Crimean War.

A statue of Thorneycroft, by sculptor Thomas Thornycroft, now stands at the top of a staircase in the foyer of the old Town Hall.
