George Stevens (California politician)

George L. Stevens (1932 – 2006) was an American Baptist minister, civil rights activist, and politician who served as a member of the San Diego City Council.

In the 1960s he participated in demonstrations against discriminatory hiring practices and was arrested several times for occupying the offices of targeted companies.

[2] As councilman he lobbied hard to bring public and private amenities for his district, which he believed had been neglected by the city for years.

[1] After retiring from the City Council, he ran for California State Assembly in 2002, but lost in the Democratic primary to Vince Hall.

[1] After the death in office of his successor on the city council, Charles L. Lewis, Stevens ran for re-election to the District 4 seat in a 2005 special election.
