She works on the Baltic Sea Region Programme as well as studying the impact of climate change on societies in Northern Europe.
She is the chair of the Global Wetland Ecohydrology Network (GWEN) and was involved with the National Geosphere Laboratory.
Destouni studied civil engineering at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, earning her Master's degree in 1987.
[2] After Destouni identified these hotspots, Sweden set up 10 new monitoring stations to augment the environmental network.
[7] She serves as the Vice Chair of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences and is part of the Baltic Sea Region Programme.
