[1] He was educated at Montpelier prep school at Paignton, Devon,[citation needed] and graduated from Brasenose College, Oxford University and joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in 1972.
[2] Following language courses at the University of Sheffield and Kamakura he became 2nd Secretary at the British Embassy in Japan in 1974.
Further appointments included the British Embassy Paris and Director, North Asian and Pacific of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
