From evidence discovered circa 1850, the St. Francis Native Americans appear to have used the town for hunting and making tools in the past.

This border area between Vermont and New York was, for a long period, not clearly under control of either state.

Early agricultural efforts included dairy herds and sheep raising.

[citation needed] The racial makeup of the town in 2020 was 97.1% White, 0.1% Black or African American, 0.7% American Indian and Alaska Native, 0.5% Asian, 0.0% Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander and 1.6% from two or more races.
