[7] His father emigrated from Bangladesh to East London in 1958 and worked in the garment trade and the restaurant industry.

[8] He went on to study at the University of East London, completing a degree in Civil Engineering.

[7][8][9] During his time at the University of East London, Khan worked as a trainee civil engineer at Tower Hamlets Council, studying for his degree part-time.

[8] He later worked at Transport for London, becoming a senior manager before joining the Muslim Council of Britain.

[8][7] Within the MCB, he has previously held the roles of Chair of the London Committee, Treasurer and Deputy Secretary General before being elected as Secretary General, initially in 2016.
