[1] Haining competed in the marathon at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, where she finished ninth, and was the top ranked Scottish athlete in the race, despite suffering from flu beforehand.
[3][4] As of 29 July 2008, she was on standby to run in the marathon if Paula Radcliffe was unable to do so.
At the age of 42 she was the oldest athlete to ever compete for Scotland in track and field.
[9] Haining works as a veterinary pathologist[10] at the Glasgow Veterinary School[1] where she has taught, among others, Scottish middle distance runner and team-mate at the 2014 Commonwealth Games Laura Muir.
