[3] Hazel Kathleen Bell (née MacAulife) was born on 5 December 1935 in Feltham, UK.

She started freelancing for publishers while raising her children and has created nearly 900 book indexes.

[3] Bell was editor of Society of Indexers' The Indexer journal[1] from 1978 to 1995 and editor of Learned Publishing journal (Association of Learned and Professional Society Publishers)[5] from 1984 to 1996.
