Herbert Lebau Griggs (March 28, 1855 – September 19, 1944) was an American banker who served as President of the Bank of New York.
[3] His maternal uncle, William Fearing Gill,[4] one of the first biographers of Edgar Allan Poe, was married to Edith Olivia Gwynne (a sister of Alice Claypoole Gwynne, wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt II).
During his twenty-one years as president, the bank's capital, profits and total deposits tripled.
Together, they were the parents of a son: His wife, who volunteered in France during World War I and was awarded the Legion of Honour, died in Paris in 1938.
[12] He returned to the United States at the outset of World War II, setting up residence at the Savoy-Plaza Hotel in New York and summering at Mountain View House in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where he died on September 19, 1944.
