Horka nad Moravou is located about 5 kilometres (3 mi) north of Olomouc.

A large part of the municipal territory lies within the Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area.

From 1533 until the establishment of a sovereign municipality in 1848, Horka nad Moravou was owned by the city of Olomouc.
